RapidDeploy Hires Leading Public Safety GIS Expert

Brooks Shannon joins RapidDeploy as VP of Product Management to further expand and innovate solution offerings

July 9, 2018

RapidDeploy, a leader in cloud-based Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) technology, announced the hiring of Brooks Shannon as Vice President of Product Management. Shannon is a national subject matter expert in public safety Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and has been involved in numerous efforts to increase and enhance location accuracy for 911 systems.

“Our CAD technology is already well-ahead of the curve in the area of GIS and location accuracy,” said Steve Raucher, co-founder and CEO of RapidDeploy. “We’ve now hired the foremost public safety GIS expert in the U.S., which means we can accelerate innovation and solutions to the people who need it most: dispatchers, first responders and the public.”

Location accuracy continues to be a critical issue for 911 systems and Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) nationwide. GIS and real-time mapping not only improve the ability to quickly and accurately identify the location of the 911 callers, but also provide essential situational awareness for the first responders.

“I don’t want to see any more tragic cases of calls getting misrouted or sent to the wrong location,” said Shannon, who resides in St. Cloud, Minn., and has visited more than 120 PSAPs during his 14-year career in public safety technology. “My entire career has been about using GIS to make the job of dispatchers and first responders better, so they can save lives and protect the public. RapidDeploy is uniquely positioned to harness that power and lead the way in Next Generation 911. I’m glad to be part of a company and team that’s really challenging the status quo.”

Shannon has spent his career furthering and innovating public safety technology, working closely with groups such as the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO), the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), the European Emergency Number Association (EENA) and other stakeholders. Shannon is co-chair of both NENA’s Location Validation Function Consistency working group and the Data Structures Committee. Shannon most recently worked at INdigital Telecom, and prior to that, GeoComm. He regularly presents at state, national and international conferences on industry trends, best practices and lessons learned related to NG911 and GIS.

The RapidDeploy team, including Raucher and Shannon, will be meeting with public safety leaders during the annual APCO Conference, Aug. 5-8 in Las Vegas, Nev., in booth #336. Raucher presented at the annual NENA Conference in June, and RapidDeploy provides funding for three NENA Gold Line scholarships.

RapidDeploy recently became the first CAD system worldwide to receive ProQA Titanium Certification from Priority Dispatch, which allows emergency communications centers to integrate with International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) protocols.
