FirstNet PSAC Chair Passes Away

Many of you have already heard of the untimely passing of our friend and colleague Tom Sorley who passed away this last weekend of a heart attack. Tom was one of those who spent his career going the extra mile in service to his profession, public safety communications. He was one of the most committed, respected and knowledgeable individuals in public safety technology. For those who didn’t know Tom here is a short list of those things he did outside his normal work as the Deputy CIO / Deputy Director, Public Safety for the City of Houston.

NPSTC (National Public Safety Telecommunications Council) – Chair of the Technology Committee
PSAC (FirstNet Public Safety Advisory Board) –  Chair
APCO (Association of Public Safety Communications Officials) – Life Member

One thing we can say is that no one person can fill the gap that has been created. It will take several skilled and committed people to step into those shoes. “Thank you, Tom, for all you have done over the years. Your commitment did not go unnoticed and you will be missed”.

I met Tom shortly after becoming a member of NPSTC. Quickly realized that beneath the fun loving guy that seemed to be everyone’s friend was a man of true integrity. I will miss greatly the wholesome friendship that we developed. I am still in shock and as some have already said “Public Safety has lost a great friend, talent and leader for the advancement of communications”. I continue to pray for his family and their loss. I pray for those still working for Houston Tx. as they find direction without Tom (you’ll hear his advice always in your heart) and also for his colleagues through out the United States and territories, we will miss him, yet will remember him always. Again the Good Ones leave much too soon. 73 OM.

Tom will be missed. I enjoyed working with Tom while I was with AASHTO.

  3. I worked with Tom at the City of Houston. I considered him a friend and confidant and I miss him already. I am saddened by his departure. He is gone much too soon.
