In late August 2005, our team at Acadian Ambulance was bracing for the unimaginable. Hurricane Katrina was heading toward Louisiana, and even with decades of disaster response experience, we knew this storm would test us in ways we’d never seen before.
And for those of us trying to respond, the disaster was made even worse by one of the greatest challenges we faced: the breakdown of communications.
